Bradford on Avon is a seven-mile hike/cycle along the picturesque canal towpath away from Bath. But even if you prefer to take a less epic route to this picture-perfect English town, just do it, not least of all because the clever folk behind the Lounge chain of cafe-bars have transformed one of B-o-A’s careworn, prosaic boozers into a hostelry that subtly blends good old traditional pub charms with boutique chic sensibilities. Inside, flagstones, beams, open fires and informal, higgledy-piggledy furniture keep contemporary Mrs Tiggywinkles happy, while an alfresco beer garden offers splendid views all the way to Salisbury Plain. Food eschews gastropub pretentions in favour of sturdy portions, big flavours, wholesome retakes on familiar pub grub favourites and proper value for money. Breakfasts include an excellent veggie version of the Full English, bar snacks range from olives to perfect pork pies and Sunday roasts come in at around £8.95. Top tip: locals addicted to the Castle’s own Flatcapper Ales often create a minor scrum at the bar, so plan for an early supper if you want to bag the comfiest seats.
