A-Z of Restaurants in Bath

The cornerstone of a location that’s fast becoming known as ‘Theatre Royal Plaza’, this tasteful, easy-going bar/restaurant hybrid caters to a tasteful, easy-going crowd. A fusion of contemporary zeitgeist and mediaeval history dictates the ambience at this split-level oasis featuring an evocative subterranean, candlelit lounge, cosy snug, elegant supper rooms and brasserie-style balcony dining, all housed within a grade II-listed Georgian building. The full-on foodie evening menu (classic modern British with occasional global twists) has recently been supplemented by a lively Grazing Menu: a neat selection of small/large plates priced between £4-9. Of the small plates, the proper Scotch Egg and dinky but surprisingly filling Ham Hock Hash are highly recommended, while the Slider Trio on the large plate selection (£8 for three small but perfectly formed fillet steak burgers) is a dish that represents the first of its kind for Bath. The extensive wine list, meanwhile, is a quaffer’s dream and Sunday lunches are spectacular. History buffs take note: the exposed wall that runs along the lounge is part of the original Bath city wall, and the flagstones in the cellar (not open to the public, but ask nicely and you might get a private tour) date back to the 8th century.

We visited GP last Friday night and really enjoyed the experience: the quality of the food has really gone from strength to strength lately. Love the new-look basement too, lit by tealights in vintage teacups!
