black line Hong Kong Bistro
"Beef, chicken, duck, prawns, pork, vegetables, tofu, coconut, fruit, chilli and on and on and on."

If you need a fast Far East fix (and a cheerful alternative to the franchise formulas that dominate the nearby SouthGate shopping centre’s refreshment scene), this contemporary, Ikea-style diner is your immediate destination diner. There aren’t any starters on the massive menu; instead, the punter is steered gently towards a range of side dishes to accompany an extensive selection of mains divided under three headings: rice dishes, noodles and soup. It may look like a straightforward formula, but the choice is exhaustive (if not exhausting): beef, chicken, duck, prawns, pork, vegetables, tofu, coconut, chilli and on and on and on, in various degrees of attention-grabbing, ‘try me’ combinations, all at rock-bottom prices.  On the downside, over-zealous serving staff, very hard seats and harsh lighting/acoustics mean the HKB is most certainly not a linger-long experience. But for a fresh, speedy refuel that won’t even threaten to impose on the budget, it can’t be beaten.

Certainly the best oriental in Bath, and quite possibly the best restaurant full stop when you factor in value for money, service and authenticity…

Wow, what’s happened to the HKB? I ate there this past weekend with my dad and couldn’t believe the plummet in standard since last time we went, a month ago. The usually excellent pad Thai came as a pile of seriously overcooked noodles containing two prawns (honestly, only two) and a handful of shards of unidentifiable meat, and the chicken and pork in dad’s sweet and sour had turned into leathery, rock-hard bullets. Meanwhile, a side order of crispy lamb – usually reliably good – seemed to be deep-fried skin only; all in all, a really nasty experience.

I wonder if the sudden influx of crowds from the nearby SouthGate centre is proving to be too much for the BK kitchen to handle? A great shame; hope it sorts itself out soon.

Without a doubt me and my husbands favorite place to eat in town. The food is fresh and full of flavour, fast service and friendly staff ( especially Adelaide who is great fun and will always recommend a dish if you’re stuck on the menu!) very reasonably priced too – can highly recommend.

  4. Rich says:

One of my favourite places to eat in Bath – delicious (relatively) authentic food in generous portions and at very reasonable prices. I had a light and fresh Wanton Soup side with a main of Roast Duck and Char Siu with stick rice, a frosty bottle of Asahi and all the green tea I could drink for just over £12. The service is fast and friendly and the always strong Asian contingent among the clientele, in my opinion, speaks volumes for the quality of the food on offer. The next best thing to Chinatown!

Take the kids?
It’s possible for families to eat quickly, cheaply and healthily at the HKB, and curious kids in search of adventure might like the lively atmosphere and milder versions of the grown up flavours on offer, but space for pushchairs and baby changing facilities are limited.
