"No chintz cushion is left unplumped, no crystal flute allowed to dull"

Tucked away in Bath’s version of the Hollywood Hills, the Bath Priory Hotel is the epitome of the Brit version of full-on glamour. No chintz cushion is left unplumped, no crystal flute allowed to dull, no commotion above the discreet tinkle of a teaspoon on the saucer of a fine bone china teacup allowed to disturb the elegant peace within this tastefully refurbished gothic mansion, home to a spa, acres of landscaped gardens, 27 luxurious bedrooms – and kitchen overseen by a superchef who’s earned himself more accolades than Slumdog Millionaire. Michael Caines’ trademark style could be described as ‘upper-crust accessible’: his dishes are as easy going on the eye as they’re graceful on the palate, and he doesn’t attempt to blind the diner with science. While the set a la carte dinner comes in at £65pp (and bear in mind that’s before pre-dinner aperitifs, wine with your meal and coffee afterwards), the guarantee of absolute perfection – from service and surroundings to the faultless grub – comes as standard; you’re paying the price for a truly stunning, memorable meal. Meanwhile, lunch (from £24 for two courses) is an absolute bargain that makes the Priory experience accessible to all.

  1. Tom says:

Retunred again to my favourite place and this time took advantage of their special Spa/Meal deal. Enjoyed a wonderful two hours relaxing using the gym equipment, taking in the heat of the sauna then a long relaxing plunge in the insdie pool.

First meal there since Micheal Caines took over the ‘oven gloves’ and was not dissapointed. Although not as ‘fussy’ as before the flavours were great, a good choice on the menu given it was a special deal and fantastic presentation.

Think the only downside was that the ambiance wasn’t quite the same and the front of house/waiting staff didn’t seem to quite have that extra professional edge as before – maybe new staff?….Guess will have to return in the future to check this out…any excuse!

Take the kids?
Although access and baby changing facilities are excellent and staff do their very best to cater to everybody’s needs, only children over the age of 8 are welcome in the dining room in the evening. The little ones can, however, enjoy High Tea up until 6.30pm, but be warned: they may not appreciate the quietly elegant surroundings as much as you do. All in all, this is quite a grown-up experience.
