black line Egg Cafe
Cakes, gooey flapjacks, Hershey bars, sugar mice, organic chocolate and fashionably retro jelly beans

At the heart of one of the most prestigious young people’s theatre projects in the country (the Theatre Royal-related egg Theatre), the egg Cafe – an offshoot of the lovely Chandos Deli chain – is one of the most cheerful refreshment pitstops in town. In lively, supremely child-friendly/teen orientated surroundings, the fresh sandwich selection features some very grown up flavour combinations (an excellent ploughman’s, a superb crayfish and rocket variety) alongside appropriate kiddie-themed treats such as salami and ketchup or good old ‘just ham’. Grown ups will appreciate the exceptionally good coffee, while sweet treats include oven-fresh cookies, sumptuous homemade cakes, gooey flapjacks, Hershey bars, sugar mice, organic chocolate and fashionably retro jelly beans. While the cafe can get a little bit noisy (especially pre- and post-performances/workshops), pavement tables on the traffic-free lane outside offer people-watching peace. Those with babies and small children, however, will appreciate the home-from-home attitude to over-excitable playmates and the caring but carefree attitude to baby changing and feeding.

I loved the idea of a theatre for children, and a kid-friendly cafe – but our experience was disappointing. The show we saw was for toddlers and was a lazy excuse for theatre. Most playgroups I go to are more stimulating and imaginative for kids than this show.
Just to add to it the loos were filthy, the cafe was a mess (with piles of dirty crockery on the tables, which could be excused briefly if the staff were busy, but two were idly chatting and the third was reading his book behind the desk! They didn’t clear anything while we were there). There is a toy area in one corner for toddlers but it is also dirty and badly maintained. The whole place is in some need of an effective manager. Please sort it out, it could be a great venue for kids!
