A-Z of Restaurants in Bath
Wednesday 8th September 2010
Having already worked their magic on the acclaimed King William, Charlie and Amanda Digney have refurbished yet another formerly careworn, lacklustre city-centre boozer to their impeccable standards, perfectly suited to the location alongside the Theatre Royal. Rustic sensibilities (chunky wooden furniture, hotchpotch kitchen knick-knackery, etc) meets urbane urban chic, with contemporary chandeliers supplementing the candlelit glow, sofas for lounging in the bar and tables on the traffic-free pavement outside. Food is top-quality gastropub grub, and an overall integrity at the heart of the matter is evident. Sunday roasts (currently Ā£15 for two courses) are particularly popular,Ā but if a la carteĀ prices induce stage fright, theĀ setĀ lunch, pre-theatre and highly recommended barĀ menu (the latter featuring excellent fish and chips and spiffing homemade burgers) make the Garrick’s an affordable treat. Meanwhile, ladies who love kitschery must not miss out on a visit to the loo: a time-warp experience that takes us back to Grandma’s house in the 1970s.

Excellent fish and chips? I beg to differ. I recently opted for what the Garrick’s confidently call ‘The Best Fish and Chips in Bath’ (the statement was even written on a chalk board outside the pub on the evening we visited) and ended up paying Ā£9.95 for a slab of the blandest, watery, totally taste-free fish (coley? Hake? Even the staff weren’t sure…) I’ve ever encountered, accompanied by potato wedges (they’re good, but they’re NOT chips) and a massive pile of salad. Salad! With fish and chips? No, no, no. Buyer (and those seduced by ‘Best…’ claims) beware.
PS. The burgers are brilliant, though. Perhaps the Garrick’s should change that chalk board?
