"Il Tocco is now GG’s: a carnivore’s paradise..."

Occupying a unique location right on the weir (a sort of contemporary, urban take on a traditional Alpine/boating lodge), the glamorous Italian trattoria Il Tocco d’Italia was best known for introducing Bath to a sophisticated version of la dolce vita around five years ago. But there’s been a bit of a shakeup when it comes to the restaurant’s USP. While the many charms of the restaurant’s original incarnation still remain – the glossy, courtyard-level bar, the spacious first floor dining room complete with alfresco veranda, and, of course, ‘that’ weir view – the restaurant formerly known as Il Tocco is now GG’s: a carnivore’s paradise.

Having said that, those who don’t go weak at the knees for a slab of well-hung flesh aren’t overlooked: there’s always a fresh fish of the day and a vegetarian option on the menu. But really, it’s all about the beef (and pork, and chicken, and even proper mutton), all impeccably sourced by – and handled and aged specifically for – GG’s head honcho Glyn Gronow. The classic, dry-aged New York Porterhouse is set to become a signature dish, and all cuts – including fillet, striploin and ribeye – are cut to order and sold by the ounce. Lunch options include cottage pie and hot salt beef sandwiches (and a proper roast on Sundays) and puds are inspired by the same traditional steakhouse sensibilities (although it’s doubtful that you’d ever find a bread pudding this good at a Berni Inn). The only minor niggle that The Pig found to snuffle about were the rather lacklustre, unremarkable chips that let down an otherwise perfect, meaty feast; go for the mashed potato instead, and you won’t be disappointed.

I was unsure of going to a steakhouse as I don’t eat meat but my boyfriend who is a big meat eater convinced me to join him for dinner. We were shown to a table by the window. I ordered the seafood black ink spaghetti which was absolutely delicious and my boyfriend had the 20oz porterhouse and ate every bit. He loved it. We will be returning soon.

My husband and I werevisiting Bath to celebrate our anniversary, We were looking for sonmewhere to go with a great view, food and ambience..
We were recommended GGs by the weir and were not dissapointed.
The staff were friendly and informative, the steak was cooked to perfection and succulent probably the best steak I have ever eaten, we had sticky toffee pudding which melted in your mouth.
The owner who is the chef visited out table to ask if we were happy, you dont often get this in restaurants now adays. he mentioned that they had recently changed and were just letting people know, the menu had a great selection of meats as well as other dishes. The set us back £64.00 with a bottle of wine. I would definitely recommend GGs to anyone wanting good food and atmosphere, we went on a thursday evening and the restaurant was fairly busy, I would definitely recommend the restaurant to people wanting great food in a great location.

Like Howard’s comments below – my husband’s birthday celebration evening was ruined by poor cooking and even worse service. The waiter returned with our friends steak and was arguing that they had indeed cooked the steak correctly, gesticulating and prodding the food infront of him. No apology offered and when we asked for the bill although they had credited the steaks they had the audacity to attempt to charge us for the side orders we obviously hadn’t eaten. Incensed by this and certainly never returning.

Well here I was thinking this place specialised in steak. If so why were our steaks cooked incorrectly. One “blue” steak came almost medium. Two med. rare came medium. They weren’t even that great taste wise. Chips frozen, not home made. Really disappointing, and totally lacking in atmosphere on a Friday night!

    Will not be rushing back.
