black line Market
Plenty of sharing platters, very decent burgers, proper pizzas and boisterous salads...

Though still going undergoing minor work-in-progress tweaks in relation to menus, offers and the revamp of the glorious people-watchers paradise that is the splendid alfresco terrace, Market has already proved to be a very welcome addition to the Sawclose scene.

Decor in this characterful, split-level, largely candlelit building blends influences from the existing smart gastropubs in the locale with the sort of cheerful vibe that makes Jamie’s Italian so popular to great effect, offering a seamless distinction between huge tables for party animals and cosy, snuggle-up corners for loved-up couples alike. Food, meanwhile, adheres to a similarly straightforward, relaxed formula: plenty of sharing platters (including a generous, mix’n’match trio of tapas to share for £4.90), very decent burgers, proper pizzas and boisterous salads, with the odd ‘Steak Night’ and fajita-style special thrown in for good measure. There’s also an excellent breakfast menu to delight early birds and later on, both wine and soft drinks are served by the carafe. The Pig loves the basket of classic burger accompaniments (French’s mustard; Heinz ketchup; Hellman’s mayo, etc) that arrives unbidden with every order; in summary, if burgers were cooked to order (some Pigs prefer to see more pink in the middle) and the perfect fries were included in the price of your beefy treat, we’d conclude that Market has hit the mark. But as we said, this welcome (and welcoming) newbie is still a work-in-progress; the Pig predicts perfection by spring.

What a great place! We went over the weekend – it was mobbed but the staff were charming. The food – especially the burgers were sensational – easily the best I have had in the UK!. The Pizza was very good but not in the same class as the burger.

Outside seating is lovely to have – we had drinks outside and then moved upstairs to eat. Good coffee too – always a good sign of a place that cares.

I would have to say it’s has the best pizzas and the tallest burgers in Bath!!
Always great when I go, staff are friendly and it’s a lovely environment.
I think I have been about 4-5 times in the last couple of months, it gets better every time!

Market, is the new restaurant on the site of the old Delfter Krug, opposite the Theatre Royal.
Their menu is simple, pizzas, burgers and salads. Although on Monday and Tuesday they do a selection of steaks, and have other specials on during the week.
I have eaten here 4 times since it opened, and every time it has been really very good! The burgers are large and juicy, the condiments top quality. The salads fresh, and good fries. The chef makes a range of excellent chili sauces, the really hot one, is just that, really hot!
The wine and beer choices are fine. The only negative i can find is that things like coca-cola, come from the pumps behind the bar, and are served in a carafe (as is the wine-there are no wine glasses, jut little rocks glasses) The coca-cola was quite watery, they just need to get their mix correct. But that is the only fault!
The restaurant itself has been nicely decorated, and the loos are smart and clean.
Burgers start from 5,95. I would recommend this as a place to go before the theatre/cinema/komedia or for an informal lunch.

I love the atmosphere in the restaurant- just can’t wait to try the food as well!

  5. Jules says:

We really enjoyed our meal at Market. The burger and fries were great (and my friend had the Portobello burger with a salad, which was suprisingly good). The place had a really warm atmosphere and the staff were friendly. Like the review above said – have the ice-cream with espresso for dessert – yum!!

  6. Sue & Friends says:

I loved the service, the best part of our visits! Not the machine driven staff with hangovers you get everywhere in Bath… the friendly Australian guy was the perfect gentleman & host.
Great steak nights on Wednesday & Thursdays. Pizza was ok and burgers amazing.
Lovely drinks and my kids gave it thumbs up too.
    More highchairs please

  7. Sally says:

I agree with Mike – most definitely the best Burgers in the UK. You can certainly taste the home-made quality.

Love the atmosphere – warm, friendly and inviting. Fantastic food and selection of wines and beers – all sensibly priced.

Roll on Spring! – I can’t wait to experience the al fresco dining their fantastic terrace will offer!

  8. Mike says:

    I have also been twice.

This is honestly the best burger I have had in the UK! The garlic bread was superb. The Pizza OK. The desserts need work on – although the espresso with ice cream was brilliant.

Chips were good. Drink selection was good. Service very friendly – a bit amateurish but I suppose its still new.

    Great new place!

  9. Humphries says:

Since opening I’ve made two visits to Market – Both have been great. The burgers are simply the best I’ve tasted (incidentally pig, both perfectly cooked and slightly pink in the middle). Loads of condiments, personable staff, cosy atmosphere and top tip: Go for a pint of the Glaswegian red beer. Couldn’t fault a thing.
