The Widcombe Mummers will be dancing in the streets on Saturday 1 January when their unique interpretation of the St George and the Dragon story brings King and Mrs Bladud, George (and Bold Slasher, his rival), the King of Egypt’s daughter and, of course, ‘that’ dragon to spirited life, accompanied by musicians “playing tunes carefully chosen to stir the blood and ward off evil weather”. The performances (which each last about 10 minutes) represent an unforgettable blast of family fun to rouse those New Year’s Day spirits, and start at St Thomas’ Church in Widcombe at noon before moving on through Widcombe Manor and Widcombe Crescent, with the grand finale taking place at Prior Park Garden Centre around an hour later. Mamma Mia indeed!
