Upton Inn

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Situated just off the well-beaten track that is A431 on the Bath side of Bitton, this sprawling but cosy country pub is as popular with locals as it is with city folk who come in search of a classic, family friendly country pub. Decor is initially eclectic, combining dark wood, dart boards and heavily patterned carpet on one side of the pub with a very elegant dining room complete with standard contemporary flourishes (slick leather furniture; chic chandeliers) on the other. But d’you know what? It works; just choose your preferred ambience and enjoy. The kitchen, meanwhile, offers no such distinctions, and the chefs fully understand the meaning of British traditional: if you crave proper prawn cocktail, excellent fish and chips, really solid beefburgers, perfect pies, a sturdy plate of liver, bacon and onions or a thoroughly decent Sunday carvery (and who doesn’t, from time to time?), this is the place to come. ‘Seniors’ (for the Upton Inn’s purposes, that means those over 55) get their own bargain priced menu from noon-6pm Mon-Sat, while the freshly cooked, healthy Juniors Menu was developed with the assistance of kids from the nearby Meadows Primary School. The Upton Inn doesn’t claim to hit the G-spot, but in its own, quiet way, it gets there anyway.
