Our second visit to the Olive Tree and this time it was combined with a stay (upstairs) at the Queensbury Hotel. The snow didn't stop us arriving on Saturday evening after a couple of hours snowfall and we were glad not to have to park the car ourselves. The hotel is very stylishly furnished with a relaxed feel to it. Our room was gorgeous and extremely comfortable.

All the restaurant staff were welcoming and friendly. When I challenged them to find me a nice glass of red wine to accompany my main and asked the same for dessert, each time they came up trumps with their recommendations. The food was outstanding and my wife and I were thrilled with each course. The service was impeccable, from the Restaurant Manager, waiting staff and barman, all seemed happy to chat and offer advice when asked.

We will certainly be coming back to the Olive Tree and I can't recommend it highly enough that if you have the opportunity, try to combine it with a stay 'upstairs'. Perfection. Yummy. 10/10.

Confit duck leg and ham hock terrine starters were excellent.

Burgers weren't shaped well enough and cooked all the way through - it made the whole thing a bit dry. Bacon hadn't had the rind removed - it's inedible when grilled.

Tripple cooked chips were nowhere near crisp enough. It felt like they forgot to cook them the 3rd time.

Desserts were simple and nice.

Would definitely go back, but would avoid any main course with chips in it.

UPDATE

Sarah Mansfield - Director of L&R Group – responds:

“The recent articles about The Parisien and Milsom Place are inaccurate on a number of counts and the landlord, the L&R Group, itself an independent business based in Bath for 10 years, is disappointed that a story has been run on without the facts being first checked.

There are no plans to take catering out of the northern courtyard at Milsom Place - indeed the intention is to increase the amount of catering there. The value of courtyard catering to the city centre environment is understood, and as such L&R has ensured more courtyard space has been introduced within the last 3 years. The planned increase in catering space will mean that there are more jobs, not fewer. The existing tenant has been asked if he would like to take a unit in the expanded catering area – so far his response has been no.

As a landlord, L&R have to balance the interests of all our tenants and create an environment where they will trade successfully. The changes we are proposing are designed to make optimum use of the space. Given the difficult economic environment L&R will continue to review Milsom Place and create the best arrangement to maximise its potential.
L&R supports independent [ventures] and there are a number trading within Milsom Place. It was a great shame when the Moon and Sixpence had to fold but a point does come when one business can no longer continue to support another”.

If you can catch a night when they have lamb shank pie on the menu go for it. Delicious. With a pint of Butcombe. Hard surfaces can make it noisy but it is always a lively place. Bear Flat was waiting for this

I loved the idea of a theatre for children, and a kid-friendly cafe - but our experience was disappointing. The show we saw was for toddlers and was a lazy excuse for theatre. Most playgroups I go to are more stimulating and imaginative for kids than this show.
Just to add to it the loos were filthy, the cafe was a mess (with piles of dirty crockery on the tables, which could be excused briefly if the staff were busy, but two were idly chatting and the third was reading his book behind the desk! They didn't clear anything while we were there). There is a toy area in one corner for toddlers but it is also dirty and badly maintained. The whole place is in some need of an effective manager. Please sort it out, it could be a great venue for kids!
