Jane’s World Jane’s World

The 10th annual Jane Austen Festival dominates Bath for a week from Friday 17 September (see ‘Going Out’ for further details). But whether you’re a Jane junkie or not, foodies will be fascinated by a couple of unique Austen-related events. ‘A Very Private Public Breakfast’ (Saturday 18, Sunday 19 and Saturday 25 September) offers an opportunity to experience an 18th Century public breakfast – complete with plum cake, hot chocolate and china tea – in the private dining room of a typical Regency Bath house. Or perhaps tea is more your thing? If so, ‘From China to Chintz’ (see ‘Public Breakfast’ dates) offers a selection of cucumber sandwiches, scones, preserves and cake, all served in similar, chintz-swathed setting. Both events feature expert-led talks on the social etiquette of the time – misbehave at your peril! Finally, food historian Holly Newton’s Regency Food Tasting (Monday 20 September) gives contemporary cooks an authentic taste of 18th century dining. Promenade your way to the website for event locations, prices and booking details.
