Stake-out the Wier View

To my mind, all too few Bath restaurants made the most of Bonfire Night this year. The anticipated flurry of pun-laden offers (‘Sparkling Cocktails!’, ‘Punch’n’parkin!’, ‘Bangin’ Bangers!’, etc) failed to make an appearance, despite a massive influx of residents taking to the city’s streets in search of merriment. Perhaps dear old Lady Bath is simply far too tasteful for such vulgar, money-spinning exercises? No matter! The municipal display on the recreation ground was indeed stunning, all the more so for The Pig, who found a lovely little hotspot from which to enjoy the spectacle in the form of Il Tocco d’Italia’s alfresco barbecue, at which I scoffed two posh sausages in a bun (oh, how I wish they’d consulted me for my puns-on-buns beforehand!) enjoyed with a warming beaker of mulled wine for less than a fiver; where others didn’t even try, Il Tocco got Bonfire Night absolutely Il Right-o.

So why hasn’t this stylishly flamboyant, weir-side trattoria got a mention in our reviews section? Because, oh eagle eyed reader, at the end of this month Il Tocco will undergo a major facelift, ditching the dolce vita vibe completely in favour of an altogether hipper rebranding exercise. Although the new name is still under consideration, the new USP will focus on well-sourced, properly aged steaks with all the correct accompaniments. There are even rumours that Knickerbocker Glory and Rumbaba will make an appearance on the dessert menu, while plans for a massive alfresco terrace overlooking the weir are in the pipeline. The Pig is booking a table for next year’s Bonfire Night spectacular already.
