Tucked away in Bath’s version of the Hollywood Hills, the Bath Priory Hotel is the epitome of the Brit version of full-on glamour. No chintz cushion is left unplumped, no crystal flute allowed to dull, no commotion above the discreet tinkle of a teaspoon on the saucer of a fine bone china teacup allowed to disturb the elegant peace within this tastefully refurbished gothic mansion, home to a spa, acres of landscaped gardens, 27 luxurious bedrooms – and kitchen overseen by a superchef who’s earned himself more accolades than Slumdog Millionaire. Michael Caines’ trademark style could be described as ‘upper-crust accessible’: his dishes are as easy going on the eye as they’re graceful on the palate, and he doesn’t attempt to blind the diner with science. While the set a la carte dinner comes in at £65pp (and bear in mind that’s before pre-dinner aperitifs, wine with your meal and coffee afterwards), the guarantee of absolute perfection – from service and surroundings to the faultless grub – comes as standard; you’re paying the price for a truly stunning, memorable meal. Meanwhile, lunch (from £24 for two courses) is an absolute bargain that makes the Priory experience accessible to all.
