At last, Bear Flat has the gastropub it so richly deserves. Gone are the ‘Meal Deals’, lager-led big screen sports events and fusty, musty, smoke-infused furnishings of the old-look Bear. In their place find chef-led homecooking, a rather splendid bar and chunky, contemporary fixtures and fittings. Breakfast is served from 8am every weekday, moving on to fabulous cakes at teatime, a spiffing roast on Sundays and, if you can encourage them to leave the toy mini-kitchen in the corner, the kids get a menu all of their own. Meanwhile, free WiFi, proper baby-changing facilities and a pastry chef who’s happy to make cakes to order add the finishing touches to what’s fast becoming Bear Flat’s ultimate créche. Can’t find it? Look for the huge white polar bear who presides over the entrance – the only remnant of the pub’s previous incarnation that has thankfully been retained.

Was in Bath Weds 14th and Thurs 15th March and found myself staying a 5 min walk from Bear. I’d popped in during last Summer for a lunchtime drink on a previous visit to Bath and it looked OK so the missus and I thought we’d eat here..and boy..are we pleased that we did. We tried the “midweek” special on the Weds night – that’s a meal and a drink (wine, beer or soft drink) for £10 per person. I went for the cheese burger and she went for the sausage and mash. Both were excellent, obviously cooked properly by a chef rather than slung into a microwave to heat up. We followed up with pudding – she had Eton Mess I had Raspberry and Almond cake. Both tastd as thought they had been made on the premises and tasted devine. To be frank, my rather brief descriptions of the food, don’t really do them justice. It was so good we went back on the Thursday night and had fish and chips off the main menu. To be frank, they were super. We each had 3 pieces of thick white fish, done in a light batter and it came served with thick chips, minted peas (superb) and caper myonnaise (both of us didn’t care for this). Apart from the fact it tasted superb, it came served on grease proof paper which was a great touch. We were so full after this, we couldn’t eat a pudding. Along with the great food, there was a really good atmosphere both nights and the candles on the table made it quite romantic. Service was really good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Plus, I think it must be the manager, a chap in his late 30′s, was very good, very cheery, it make a pleasant change from some of the grumpy souls you come across. So all in all, first class and I’ll defo be back next time we’re in Bath. Suffice to say, I’ve no conenction with the people who run Bear, it was just really, relaly good.
Found it a bit too cold and winebar esq for me. But that said staff are polite and the beer not bad at all. A decent local. Shame I live in Bristol.
