A distinctive, popular cornerstone of the burgeoning ‘Widcombe scene’, featuring homely dining rooms, a lively bar area and a gorgeous courtyard haven out back. Food is unpretentious but inspired enough for the Good Food gluttons to big up the quality at the Hart of the matter in this year’s Guide: a real ‘go with the flow’ affair, from the ‘signature’ rough pesto/mint and lemon hummus bar platter/starters to gert big homemade puds, with all manner of modern BritMed treats in between. The alfresco courtyard outback is quite possibly the prettiest in Bath — no wonder the White Hart’s ‘rooms to rent’ (which overlook both the shrubbery and the mild-mannered action on hot summer nights) are booked up long in advance of vacation season. However, there can be a bit of a ‘regulars/locals only’ feel at weekends, so avoid peak times if you’re prone to social paranoia.

Used to be pretty good, but we ate there recently and I had a very dissapointing, bland meal. I mentioned this to the waitress and she just shrugged. No apology or suggestion that she would mention it to the chef. The White Hart isn’t cheap and we go there as a treat. Next time we’ll go somewhere that isn’t so complacent.
